Aldi announces pay rise for 28.000 employees to more than £10 an hour

ALDI, the supermarket firm that plans to expand further with outlets in the UK, has signalled that its employees will receive higher wages from February 2022.

At the moment the company pays its staff £9.55 an hour - or £11.07 in London. Giles Hurley, Aldi UK and Ireland's CEO, today said: "We want to ensure our colleagues are always fully rewarded for their amazing work.

These new rates, together with the fact that we are the only supermarket to pay colleagues for breaks taken during their shifts, means we continue to offer the best pay in the supermarket sector."

The announcement involves 21.000 Lidl staff and is about 60p cents per hour more than the national minimum wage.

Aldi's rival, Lidl GB, said last month that starting salaries would increase from £10.85 an hour inside the M25 to £11.30, and £9.50 out of the capital by March 2022 to £10.10.

Long serving staff will also see their salaries increase to around £11.40 and £12.25, depending on their length of service, outside and within London. Aldi announced in September that it had acquired 100 more Aldi shops in the UK, which now has around 950, including 54 in London.
