The American chicken chain Popeyes has announced it will launch its first stand-alone restaurant in Britain.

American chain Popeyes is to serve its famous Louisiana Fried Chicken at its soon-to-open High Street store.

The new location in Chelmsford will be the US icon's first stand-alone restaurant in Britain.

Popeyes says hens lovers from around Britain travelled to Stratford, London, in November to sample Popeyes with visitors arriving from Birmingham, Essex and even the far north, as far-out as Newcastle and York.

The chain opened its first store in the country as part of its Food Court in Westfield Stratford. Popeyes Stratford currently has more than 3.600 restaurants worldwide in the top ten.

Popeyes UK, the UK's first franchisee, aims to open up hundreds of sites in the next decade and has unveiled two additional delivery kitchens, in Battersea and Whitechapel to fill these needs.

Peter Genna, Head of Global Cookery Innovation and Product Development for Popeyes brand, added: "It's exciting to be opening the first UK restaurant in Chelmsford.

Popeyes UK has ambitious plans to rapidly become a British staple and to never compromise on the quality that Popeyes is famous for.

We have no doubt that Chelmsford guests will love Popeyes famous Louisiana chicken."
