Lidl to Roll out ‘Too Good to Waste’ Fruit and Veg Boxes Nationwide

Friday, March 29, 2019

Popular supermarket chain Lidl has announced that it will roll out produce boxes across all UK stores after a successful trial last year.  They will be providing each store with its ‘Too Good to Waste’ boxes, retailing for £1.50.  These produce boxes are designed to start a reduction of store-level food, while also providing healthy food at accessible prices.  Each box contains around 5kg of fruit and vegetables that are completely fine for consumption and will consist of items past their best or not up to the current regulations around size, shape and colour.

The boxes are prepared daily by Lidl staff in-store to ensure they’re providing food that’s good to consume and are being sold between opening hours and midday.  After midday any leftovers will be sent for redistribution, following Lidl’s community food scheme, Feed it Back.  This allows Lidl to send products straight to local causes, reducing food waste and carbon emissions from transport.

Waitrose and Morrisons have also begun schemes similar to this one, which is a benefit not just to the environment but also for customers as the food is more affordable and sustainable.
