Hospital patients can order food 24 hours a day after review led by Prue Leith

Hospital customers will be able to order meals by their beds 24 hours a day under plans designed to revolutionise NHS food.

Hospital meals can be 'delicious, nutritious and nicely presented', says Great British Bake Off judge Prue Leith, after conducting a review of meals offered to patients and staff.

National standards for NHS cooks are being introduced, while nurses and nutritionists play a bigger part in providing hospital food.

Recommendations have included modernised kitchens that can meet a wide range of needs, from new moms in a maternity unit to patients hungry for a long surgically repaired "fasting" to workers who work through the night.

The kitchens are modernised, to offer food, snacks and hot drinks round the clock, so that tired mothers for example can eat hot meals at night after the birth.
